Our Leadership Team
PASTOR GORDON WEIR Gordon has been Pastor at BEC since 2011. Married to Alli, with three
children and three grand-children, Gordon is a Doonhamer (a native of
Dumfries!) He has previously served in churches in Stockport, Leven and
Houghton-le-spring. He is
passionate about teaching the Bible in a way that it can be understood,
so that it is just as practical on a Monday morning in ‘real life’ as it
is on a Sunday in church. He is a
self-confessed Facebook addict and golf nut, but doesn’t play nearly as
much he would like to! He tries to slip in as many U2 song references
into his sermons as he can and takes great pride in Queen of the South
being the only football team mentioned in the Bible.
ELDER - NIGEL AKAM Nigel
has lived in Largs and been a member of BEC for 40 years and an Elder
for more than 20 years. He is currently Church Secretary and also has
responsibility for church administration, building maintenance and
interface with external organizations that make use of BEC’s facilities,
which is one of the ways that the Church is reaching out into the local
community. He has two grown up daughters and two grandsons.
He is semi-retired and works part time with an educational charity organizing industry visits for secondary school pupils. When he’s not
busy looking after the church facilities, Nigel can be found on the
ELDER - JIM LAMONT Jim is
married to Renee and they have two sons.
Jim works for a large IT
company. He enjoys running and will normally be out 5 days per week. He
is often spotted pounding the pavements by church members! Jim says,
“My life changed when I became a Christian in 1995 and it’s fantastic to
know that despite me, God loves me completely.”
as being one of the elders at BEC Jim is also involved in leading the
Youth Church, seeking to encourage young people in their relationship
with Jesus. Jim regularly leads the BEC services and uses his
communication skills and sense of fun to make everyone feel right at
DEACON - ELAINE AITCHISON Born in
Airdrie, Elaine moved to Wemyss Bay when she was 10, when her parents
joined BEC. She became a Christian at 18, after her dad's death, but
despite her faith Elaine concedes she made big decisions without Jesus
at the centre of her life. She married and moved to Bamburgh, where her
daughter Shona was born.
says, “Through continual prayers of my family and God’s promise to never
leave me, I found Alnwick Baptist Church and there I was strengthened
with great Bible teaching and the love of many friends.” She works in
Largs, both at the Post Office and at Aldo’s. Elaine is part of the
Worship Team and Teen Challenge Bus Ministry -sharing the hope of Jesus
with our community.
DEACON - MAURA EDWARDS
became a deacon in 2009, after joining BEC in 2005 following the family
move to Largs. Prior to this, she lived and worshipped in Glasgow.
Although she had been brought up to attend church, it was only in her
20s that she realised the need for a personal relationship with Jesus,
and so became a Christian in 1993. Maura is one of the worship leaders
at BEC and also directs the church choir.
works as a dental consultant for the local health board, including
working on projects for some of the most vulnerable people in our
community. Maura is married to David, and they have one son, Callum.
