New Life in Jesus Christ

Our Leadership Team

Pastor Gordon WeirPASTOR GORDON WEIR  Gordon has been Pastor at BEC since 2011.  Married to Alli, with three children and three grand-children, Gordon is a Doonhamer (a native of Dumfries!)  He has previously served in churches in Stockport, Leven and Houghton-le-spring.   He is passionate about teaching the Bible in a way that it can be understood, so that it is just as practical on a Monday morning in ‘real life’ as it is on a Sunday in church.  He is a self-confessed Facebook addict and golf nut, but doesn’t play nearly as much he would like to! He tries to slip in as many U2 song references into his sermons as he can and takes great pride in Queen of the South being the only football team mentioned in the Bible.

ELDER - NIGEL AKAM   Nigel Akam Nigel has lived in Largs and been a member of BEC for 40 years and an Elder for more than 20 years.  He is currently Church Secretary and also has responsibility for church administration, building maintenance and interface with external organizations that make use of BEC’s facilities, which is one of the ways that the Church is reaching out into the local community.  He has two grown up daughters and two grandsons. He is semi-retired and works part time with an educational charity organizing industry visits for secondary school pupils.  When he’s not busy looking after the church facilities, Nigel can be found on the badminton court.

Jim LamontELDER - JIM LAMONT  Jim is married to Renee and they have two sons.
Jim works for a large IT company.  He enjoys running and will normally be out 5 days per week.  He is often spotted pounding the pavements by church members!  Jim says, “My life changed when I became a Christian in 1995 and it’s fantastic to know that despite me, God loves me completely.”

As well as being one of the elders at BEC Jim is also involved in leading the Youth Church, seeking to encourage young people in their relationship with Jesus.  Jim regularly leads the BEC services and uses his communication skills and sense of fun to make everyone feel right at home.

Elaine AitchisonDEACON - ELAINE AITCHISON  Born in Airdrie, Elaine moved to Wemyss Bay when she was 10, when her parents joined BEC.  She became a Christian at 18, after her dad's death, but despite her faith Elaine concedes she made big decisions without Jesus at the centre of her life. She married and moved to Bamburgh, where her daughter Shona was born.

Elaine says, “Through continual prayers of my family and God’s promise to never leave me, I found Alnwick Baptist Church and there I was strengthened with great Bible teaching and the love of many friends.”  She works in Largs, both at the Post Office and at Aldo’s.  Elaine is part of the Worship Team and Teen Challenge Bus Ministry -sharing the hope of Jesus with our community.

Maura EdwardsDEACON - MAURA EDWARDS
Maura became a deacon in 2009, after joining BEC in 2005 following the family move to Largs. Prior to this, she lived and worshipped in Glasgow.   Although she had been brought up to attend church, it was only in her 20s that she realised the need for a personal relationship with Jesus, and so became a Christian in 1993.  Maura is one of the worship leaders at BEC and also directs the church choir.

Maura works as a dental consultant for the local health board, including working on projects for some of the most vulnerable people in our community.  Maura is married to David, and they have one son, Callum.
